Improper use of face masks may increase COVID-19 infection risks under the current epidemic situation, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday, citing an expert from Shenzhen Health Education and Promotion Center.

Wearing masks is an effective way to prevent the virus’ transmission among people. However, wearing masks incorrectly could, in fact, potentially contribute to viral transmission.

Some citizens may have been improperly doing the following with their masks during the epidemic: not wearing the mask tightly with the nose or chin exposed, wearing the mask under the chin, or dangling the mask on one ear. In addition, some citizens also do not put away their masks properly after use, such as putting them in their pockets or bags, on a desk, or around their wrists or arms, the report said.

The expert believes that any incorrect use of masks can provide an opportunity for the virus to spread. If people do not wear masks properly, they have greater risks of COVID-19 infection. The expert urges citizens to wear the masks properly and discard used ones correctly, so that the masks can truly play their role in COVID prevention.
